Why is groundwater important?
• Over 95% of WI’s communities rely on groundwater for their drinking water.
Where does groundwater come from?
Groundwater is a LOCAL resource, influenced by local land use decisions. In sandy soils where groundwater moves relatively quickly at 1 foot/day, it takes 14 years for groundwater to move one mile.
Pesticides in groundwater
• Pesticides = herbicides, insecticides and fungicides
• 13 million pounds of pesticides are applied to the major crops in WI each year; over 2 pounds for each person in WI.
