TR moves toward becoming an Energy Independent Community

TWO RIVERS — City Council members passed a resolution Monday evening that will result in the city being designated an Energy Independent Community, giving it a better chance at environmental block grant funding.

The council voted 7-2, with Brian Powell and Mike Panosh voting no, to approve a resolution indicating the city's support of the state's "25x25 Goals."

While there are other specific components, essentially the state's goal is to generate 25 percent of its electricity and transportation fuels from renewable resources by 2025, said Tom Bushman, electric utility director with Two Rivers Water & Light.

Passing the resolution is one of three steps needed to become an Energy Independent Community with a one-star rating, the lowest of three levels. The other requirements are to post on the Two Rivers Water & Light Web site information about the city's efforts toward energy independence and include a link to the Office of Energy Independence Web site, and conduct three community events related to energy independence.
