APPLETON — The city of Appleton has received $1.5 million in federal stimulus dollars for public transportation upgrades, with one project, the replacement of the Valley Transit building's roof, already under way. . . .
Other Valley Transit bus system capital projects covered by these funds include:
•Purchasing three small hybrid buses that have wheelchair tie-down sections and run on an alternative or alternatives to diesel fuel.
•Upgrading fare boxes to a computerized system that frees drivers from having to manually count fares and track types of rides.
•Remodeling the downtown transit center to comply with Americans with Disabilities Act standards.
•Enhancing bus stop signs to include route numbers and times.
Also in Wisconsin, Eau Claire received $2 million for transit upgrades.
