Lawrence, UW-Oshkosh named "green" colleges

Two Northeast Wisconsin universities have made one publication’s list of “green colleges.”
Lawrence University in Appleton and the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh were among 311 schools listed in The Princeton Review’s 2011 list of green colleges.
The Princeton Review worked with the U.S. Green Building Council to create the list and an accompanying guidebook. Organizers said they considered three factors in their ratings: sustainability of the students’ quality of life, preparation of students to face environmental challenges, and the school’s overall commitment to environmental issues.

Wild Ones offering two rain barrel workshops, April 30 & May 15
This year Wild Ones is pleased to offer two types of rain barrel workshops at the national Wild Ones WILD Center this spring.
The first type will be presented by Master Gardener Rod Sternhagen at the WILD Center on Saturday, April 30th. Workshops will be approximately two hours long, scheduled for 10:00 a.m. and 1:00 p.m. Rod will provide hands-on instruction for you to create your own rain barrel. Workshop rain barrels will be 55 gallon drums. The finished rain barrel will have a permeable lid which makes it insect, child, and pet proof. Cost $50/ non-members, $45/Wild Ones members. Includes the barrel and materials.
The second type will be presented by Eric Schmitz of 4Evergreen Ecoscapes on Friday May 15th at 5:30 p.m. This rain barrel will also be a 55 gallon drum and includes the RainReserve diverter system. The rain barrel will be completely enclosed with a diverter for overflow rainwater. Cost $80/non-member and $75/ Wild Ones members. Includes the barrel and materials.

LEED Existing Bldgs-Operations & Maint Course, 9 weeks, starting March 28
Fox Valley Technical College is offering a nine-week class focusing on the LEED Existing Buildings-Operations & Maintenance rating system. There are only two people registered and more are needed to launch this class. I am one of the registered.
The course is scheduled for Mondays from 5:00pm to 7:00pm, starts March 28 and ends May 23. It will be held at the Sustainability technology center in the Tri-Park east of the Appleton main campus. The cost is $249.00 plus the LEED EBOM Reference Guide. The instructor is Eric Siebers from Boldt. Eric and I are prior colleagues and I believe he will be an excellent instructor. He is an Electrical Designer at Boldt and is involved all of Boldt's LEED projects.
This nine-week course provides a comprehensive overview of the LEED Existing Buildings-Operations & Maintenance rating system. Knowledge of this rating system provides a tool for building owners, managers and practitioners to maximize the operational efficiency of their buildings, while minimizing environmental impacts.
Participants will gain an understanding of the core concepts and strategies behind a successful existing green building project. The course addresses the needs of key stakeholders in existing building operations and maintenance projects, including building owners and operators, property and facility managers, engineers and contractors. Exam preparation is also covered.

Executives: Being 'green' can save money

TOWN OF MENASHA — Some business executives say doing what’s right for the planet puts too much strain on the bottom line.
Attendees at Wednesday’s Wisconsin Sustainable Business Council Conference, hosted by Miron Construction, wanted to debunk that way of thinking and say being green can save money as well as be a revenue generator.
“We know when you can bring in more natural light into a building, it just makes people feel better,” said Gary Kusnierz, vice president of performance excellence for Menasha-based Affinity Health System. “But another benefit is you pay less on your lighting costs.”
Shane Lauterbach, president of the Lauterbach Group, a Sussex-based printing and packaging firm, said sustainability is an important component of productivity at his company. The firm follows lean manufacturing or efficiency methods and found ways to increase productivity as well as reduce its carbon footprint.
“It does take some investment but common sense ideas also are involved,” Lauterbach said. When the company opened its new facility in 2009, many energy savings ideas were incorporated into its design.

• Describe community local ordinances supportive of good green building practices as seen by the home building and re-conditioning businesses of the Valley Home Builders Association (VHBA).

The home will be sold at fair market value and the proceeds will be donated to the 501(c)(3) non-profit WBA Foundation to fund future education and research projects for the benefit of the housing industry in Wisconsin.

APPLETON — Community partnerships and sustainability remain focal points for Lawrence University as the campus moves through a new academic year.
Lawrence held its first-ever Report to the Community on Tuesday at its new Warch Campus Center.
Lawrence continues to work with the community in long-established ways and remains receptive to new opportunities to extend learning beyond campus, LU President Jill Beck said.
"We all have a moral, ethical and an emotional stake in seeing that our region is successful," she said.
The four-story, $35 million campus center served not only as a backdrop, but also a highlight of the Lawrence message.
Beck welcomed the community to make use of the new building. She cited it as a key piece of the university's "Green Roots" sustainability focus.
It's a green-certified building. The university's garden just across Lawe Street, meanwhile, provides produce for Lawrence's food service program.

State approves construction of green building for UWO

MADISON – The State Building Commission Monday approved the design of the first academic building to be constructed on the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh campus in 37 years.
At an estimated cost of $48.3 million, the 117,597-square-foot structure was touted by UWO Chancellor Richard Wells as not only "the most significant green building of its size in the state," but one that will create 2,000 construction jobs during the next two years.
The building is one of only four academic buildings being built statewide during the current two-year budget, and it is being considered for inclusion on the state's wish list for funding in the federal economic stimulus package currently before Congress. . . .
The UW-Oshkosh campus is considered the state's "most sustainable" regarding renewable energy use and the new building adds to that claim. It will be located in the center of campus between High and Pearl avenues and topped with solar panels for heating and generating electricity. The building will be 41 percent more energy efficient than state codes require.
Roof top gardens would decrease storm water runoff and while a wind turbine has been discussed for the campus, but won't be part of this project, Wells said.

Think conservation when building, buying new home

Shortly after the 1970s energy wake-up call, I was invited to a seminar for architects on passive energy.
I was introduced to climate and weather conditions; building orientation; building envelope energy calculations; green cost of various building materials; natural heating, cooling and lighting systems; and comparative costs of available forms of energy.
Following that enlightenment, I was changed forever and redoubled my effort over the past decades in pioneering passive solar buildings, condominiums and planned unit developments, all in the interest of conservation of land and resources. The Post-Crescent recognized the importance of many of these projects and reported on them enthusiastically.
American society soon forgot the exaggerated predictions that we will run out of oil near the turn of the century, adjusted to the ever-increasing rise in energy cost and began the most extravagant expansion of homebuilding in history.
Buildings have improved in quality and efficiency, but how many grand foyers, unused formal living and dining rooms, little-used kitchens and spas and home theaters do we need?
The long-term cost of maintaining an overbuilt inventory of homes and a public infrastructure for oversized lots, compounded with urban sprawl, presents a problem for society. I think it's time to satisfy our true needs rather than our overindulgences.
Biggar's letter continues with several conservation recommendations.

Lawrence University launches new green initiative

APPLETON — The Vikings want to go green.
Lawrence University launched a campuswide initiative Thursday to build on the school's drive for environmental sustainability.
It already has entered into an exclusive partnership with the students who maintain the Sustainable Lawrence University Garden. All produce grown in the garden now is served in Lawrence dining halls.
The school also recently signed with Red Barn Family Farms, a new Appleton family-owned dairy company, to serve its premium brand of milk in both of the college's dining halls beginning the end of this month. The local shipment will reduce gasoline emissions and support the Fox Valley economy.
Lawrence will intensify its efforts with Green Roots, a 10-person committee of faculty, staff and students. They will study the environmental footprint of the college and propose institutional changes to increase environmental awareness and sustainability.
"This is Earth. This is where we live, and we only have one of these," said Jeff Clark, associate professor of geology and a committee spokesman.
The biggest push for sustainability on campus is already in the works. The Campus Center — a $35 million building slated for completion next spring — will compete for environmentally friendly certification.

WPPI wants to fund zero energy homes
From a media release from Wisconsin Public Power, Incorporated:
Homeowners looking to build or remodel in communities served by WPPI member utilities have an opportunity to reduce their carbon footprint through WPPI’s GreenMax Home program. WPPI is now soliciting competitive proposals for grants to help fund the construction of up to three net zero energy homes within WPPI member utility service areas.
As part of WPPI’s overall efforts to encourage public and community support for renewable energy, energy conservation and energy efficiency, the GreenMax Home program will help customers build highly efficient, environmentally friendly homes. Grants will be awarded to cover part of the incremental cost of designing and building a GreenMax Home over the cost of constructing a conventional Upper Midwest house. Incremental costs will include the design elements and technologies directly related to reducing energy use or producing energy through renewable resources.

To the greatest extent possible, the energy consumption (heating, cooling and electrical) of the homes will be provided by renewable energy sources.

Homeowners looking to build or remodel in communities served by WPPI member utilities have an opportunity to reduce their carbon footprint through WPPI’s GreenMax Home program. WPPI is now soliciting competitive proposals for grants to help fund the construction of up to three net zero energy homes within WPPI member utility service areas.
As part of WPPI’s overall efforts to encourage public and community support for renewable energy, energy conservation and energy efficiency, the GreenMax Home program will help customers build highly efficient, environmentally friendly homes. Grants will be awarded to cover part of the incremental cost of designing and building a GreenMax Home over the cost of constructing a conventional Upper Midwest house. Incremental costs will include the design elements and technologies directly related to reducing energy use or producing energy through renewable resources.

Green Home Pavilion at Energy Fair, June 20-22
From the just-released program for The Energy Fair in Custer, Wisconsin (just outside of Stevens Point), June 20-22:
New in 2008, the Green Home Pavilion is designed to help fair-goers find green, sustainable resources for their home. It features exhibit spaces and a workshop area. Exhibitors will include green building materials, energy efficient products, and sustainable home products. The Green Home Pavilion workshops will cover different aspects of creating a green home. Sweetwood Development is the developer of Neenah’s “Cottages at Woodside”, the new green community now under construction. Leon’s talk will be highlighting the many design aspects that make projects like his a deeper shade of green. Find out:

• What are the green building guidelines that developers use today?
For over 20 years, Leon has ventured into design/build residential construction, residential and commercial remodeling, and land development, always striving to be innovative, always looking for a new twist to an old idea, and always testing the marketplace for acceptance of new concepts.
He notes that as is the case with many manufacturers and businesses across the state, the housing industry is becoming more aware of methods to build homes and develop neighborhoods in ways that complement and enhance the natural environment. Making them work together for the good of the environment and the good of humanity is the guiding force behind much of what we do in creating innovative yet affordable housing.
Builders and developers recognize the importance of planning for future generations while meeting the needs of today.
Leon is currently a member of the Wisconsin Builders Association Development Council and the Valley Home Builders Association Developers Council. He has been an integral part of the Green Tier development program and in May of 2007 was the first builder/developer to receive Wisconsin’s Tier 1 certification under the new ECCo-Dev Charter.

Plymouth company installs solar panels on recycled baby diaper shingles

WAUKESHA - From the faux-slate shingles made of recycled baby diapers and rooftop solar panels to its engineered wood floors, the house being built at 1512 Rock Ridge Way in Waukesha is anything but traditional.
The 2,100 square-foot house is the 2008 Wisconsin Trend Home and when completed later this summer will house the latest in energy-saving and environmentally-friendly technology.
Starting at the top, Tim O’Brien, of O’Brien Homes, Waukesha, builder of the home, walked through some of its cutting edge highlights.
"The shingles, which look like slate, are made of recycled baby diapers, tires and plastic bottles," he said. "Because they’re light, they don’t need the structure to support them so you need less wood. You’re doing something good for the environment by using product made from recycled material. They also have a 50-year life span."
According to Lisa Schaal, solar site assessor for Sol Power, Milwaukee, the 20 solar panels on the roof enable the house to use about 500 or less kilowatts per month, compared with the average home electricity usage of 800 kilowatts per month.
Dave Schwabenlender, of Arch Electric, LLC of Plymouth, said the panels will generate power even on cloudy days.
